Success Story, Norayar Baboumian Rehabilitation Center: Artak Grigoryan

Artak Gevorgyan is 39 years old and lives in the village of Tsovagyugh.

In 2017, at the age of 30, he was involved in a road traffic accident, as a result of which he suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. He spent three months in the hospital receiving treatment, and a tracheostomy was placed, which is replaced every six months. For a long period he also received treatment at the Soldiers’ Home.

After the rehabilitation center of Dr. Norayar Baboumian was founded in Sevan, he came to the center accompanied by his mother and wife. At first, they brought him with great difficulty in a wheelchair strapped in, because he could not walk and could not sit.

He was unable to maintain balance, and his functional movements were uncontrolled. His hearing was normal, but in general he did not follow instructions.

The rehabilitation doctor prescribed therapy with a physiotherapist and an occupational therapist. Up to today, he has completed seven courses of therapy at the center. In the initial period he would not allow anyone near him and refused all kinds of contact. Gradually, the specialists were able to build contact and over time it became possible to carry out the professional therapy.

As a result, he can now walk with assistance from both sides, though still with great difficulty. He follows instructions clearly and comes to the center with pleasure. Even though every action is difficult for him, he strives to do everything that is asked of him. Artak has already formed an emotional bond with the team. In many cases he does not want to leave the center, holding the specialist’s hand tightly. Unable to speak, Artak often expresses his emotions through tears.

Artak always comes to the center accompanied by his mother and wife. He has two underage children. His mother used to cry constantly, but during the last course we have already seen a smile on her face, because a remarkable improvement in Artak’s condition has been observed. She says that Artak also started communicating with his loved once through his emotions.  According to his mother, he can now climb up and down the stairs at home while holding on, on his own. He can now eat as well.

Artak’s wife is stronger and more optimistic than his mother. Despite her difficult life, she continues to smile. She always comes to the center well-groomed, and once said that Artak had always seen her well cared of herself and she has not right to give up. His mother and wife are the great support thank to which Artak keeps fighting- he wants to become the Artak who can hug his family members, speak and laugh with them.

One day Artak’s wife, holding back tears, told our staff, “My love grows stronger every day, and that’s my hope that one day Artak will fully recover”.
